Biography Matt Roberts (b. August 1986) is a London-based composer and trumpeter. Matt grew up in Darlington, in the north-east of England. His early musical experiences involved attending folk festivals with his parents and playing cornet in local brass bands. At the age of 16, Matt discovered jazz. This sparked a love that led him to attend Leeds College of Music, where he studied with the likes of Neil Yates, Gerard Presencer, Barak Schmool, Matthew Bourne and many other outstanding educators. Matt graduated from LCM in 2008 with 1st Class Honours and was awarded the 'Fred and Ethel Tolson Memorial Prize for Brass', the 'Friends Prize for Composition', the 'James F Cardno Prize for Academic Achievement' and the University of Leeds 'Armes Prize'. In 2009, Matt received the ‘Worshipful Company of Musicians Composition Prize’. That same year Matt was awarded a Leverhulme Trust Scholarship to study a Masters degree in composition at Trinity College of Music, London. Here Matt studied with Issie Barratt, Stephen Montague, Deirdre Gribbin, Liam Noble and Mark Lockheart. Whilst at Trinity, Matt won the 2010 ‘Dankworth Prize for Jazz Composition’. Matt graduated from Trinity College of Music in the summer of 2011 with Distinction and was awarded the 'Chappell Composition Prize'. He now works as a freelance performer, composer and educator.
